WSTM
most of my rellies are on FB (aren't everyones?) and it's cringeworthy
seeing their 'updates' when I visit their houses.

'Thinking of having bacon sandwiches for tea'

'Can't wait for tomorrow as I'm going to XYZ's house'

And so on.....even worse are the on / off / on / off relationships of the
younger ones who feel the need to inform the world everytime they split up /
get back together over a piece of fucking toast.

On a related note, there has been burglaries of peoples houses where
facebook has played a major part.

'Yippee, I'm going on holiday tomorrow!' and 'wahaaay, we're going on an all
night lash-up in blackpool' being the obvious clues to the stripey jumpered
fraternity.

People keep asking me to join and can't understand when I tell them I
wouldn't sign up to that piece of shit for a gold clock.

Bound to happen Mike, social networking sites will probably cause the
death of usenet if only because you have more control over content,
information sharing and who you interact with.

Most things are eventually shunted into unproductive homogenised 2D
versions of what could have been, by corporate interests that can't make
as much money with what they replaced. The slow but inevitable drift into
these dead-end cul-de-sacs is because most folks are all too happy to be
led into them.

Try telling someone how legally liable they are for blog entries, versus
the "protected freedom of speech" levels available on usenet, and they
just shrug, quote some vapid excuse they remember from a pro-blog page,
and carry on using something they can access through the only tool they
ever learned to click away at, their browser.

As the sages say though, t'was ever thus.

So much for progress. :(

"Starship Troopers" FedNet here we come.

Ah! Yeah. Still not even managed to ge the thing to kick off in any way.

Unless I strike lucky and get it into some reader that can find the
missing bits on the disk and actually read it in some way, I think the
disk is SNAFU and the data effecively lost.

I blame Virginmedia. (There, back on topic for the NG)

On the topic of your disk, I'm afraid I have no ther suggestions apart
from those you've got already.

And I'm quite surprised a certain german software author hasn't arrived
to tell you you did it all wrong and should have used the Solaris
versions of his tools ;)

It is no longer for me to educate him.
Good luck to whoever steps up for the task though.
